Viewed with ill-concealed disapproval by the academic community, Professor Mondrian Kilroy was adored by his students, who still remember his bizarre but brilliant lectures. In particular, a legendary status has been conferred upon the enigmatically titled ‘Lecture 21′. This lesson was conceived in the period the professor devoted to deconstructing what were – in his opinion – the most overrated works of art, and its thesis hinged entirely upon a deconstruction of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

‘Lecture 21’ tells the tale of that lesson, weaving the parallel narratives of Kilroy’s student Marta, a host of Viennese musicians and aristocrats, and the magnificently constructed world of the ‘Wentzels’.
